The town straddles the River Shannon, with its main area in County Leitrim and a smaller section, Cortober, across the river in County Roscommon. The railway station is located on the Roscommon side.
The Irish name, Cora Droma Rúisc, means “weir of the marshy ridge.” The Leitrim side of the town lies in the civil parish of Kiltoghert, in the barony of Leitrim, while the Roscommon side is part of the civil parish of Killukin in the barony of Boyle.
